Cosmetic dentistry is now a major part of modern life, with treatments like porcelain veneers and teeth whitening being very popular. In fact, studies by the American Association of Orthodontists show that nearly 90% of patients want their teeth whitened. Even though cosmetic dentistry is common now, it has changed a lot over time. Today, these services are widely available and help many people improve their smiles. Keep reading to understand how cosmetic dentistry has evolved over time into its current practices.

Ancient Cosmetic Dentistry

In 700 B.C., the Etruscans in ancient Italy made dentures from ivory, bone, and teeth from animals and deceased people. The ancient Egyptians also replaced missing teeth, using seashells and gold bridges and crowns.

Additionally, the ancient Romans whitened their teeth with urine, which contains ammonia, a bleaching agent. Although it sounds gross, it worked! Thankfully, today we have more effective and sanitary methods for improving smiles.

Medieval Times

In the past, barbers also acted as dentists. For a whiter smile, they would file down teeth and apply a coating, which damaged the teeth. Europeans used ivory and bone for dentures, but they were uncomfortable. They also tried using teeth from deceased people, but the body often rejected them.

The Age of Enlightenment

Cosmetic dentistry made significant strides in the 1700s with the introduction of porcelain dentures, a material still used today. However, there were still some missteps. In the 1800s, metal was used to fill gaps left by missing teeth, but these were often rejected by the body. Dentists also started using plaster molds to make better-fitting dentures during this time.

20th Century and Modern Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry truly advanced in the 20th century. In the early 1900s, new materials were introduced for cosmetic treatments. Since porcelain was too expensive, cheaper alternatives like plastics and acrylics were used for dentures and crowns. Acrylic remains a popular material for making dentures today.

There was a growing emphasis on enhancing the appearance of teeth to make them look healthier and more attractive. Treatments such as teeth whitening and restorative procedures like dental implants and fillings gained popularity for their aesthetic benefits. Veneers, initially invented in the 1930s for temporary use by film stars, eventually evolved into durable options accessible to everyone.

Cosmetic dentistry has significantly advanced over the years. If you’re looking to enhance your smile, reach out to your dentist to achieve a beautiful set of teeth!
